Dear God, I Wish You Were a Woman

Trust in God; She will provide. -- Emmeline Pankhurst

Dear God,
I wish you were a woman
Because since I was a girl
I’ve pictured you as a white man
With white hair
Dressed in a long white robe.
And I am not a man
And my skin is a shade of deep chocolate brown.
So how can I believe that I was created in your image?

Dear God,
I wish you were a woman
Because sometimes feminism feels like my religion.
Because conversations with other women fill me with the Holy Ghost
More than any church service ever has.
Because the pro-woman words of my favorite girl power anthems
Move me more than any hymn ever could.

Feminist: a person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
This is my Apostle's Creed.

Dear God,
I wish you were a woman so I could stop whispering the words,
"She so loved the world"
And start boldly proclaiming them instead.

Dear God,
Sometimes I believe you are a woman
Sometimes I believe that feminine, yet fierce, yet friendly voice
That I hear in my heart
That I hear in my head
Guiding me, comforting me, cheering me on
That voice that as I child I thought must be the imaginary friend adults said I should have
That voice that as a woman I thought was proof that I was losing my mind
Sometimes -- I believe that voice is You.

I think.

I hope.

I pray.

  1. This is great. I like to believe that since we were all created in God's image, that there is just as much of me and you, and all other women in who God is. We think about this idea of mothers being nurturers, but that had to start with God. Have you read The Shack? I like that version of God.
